A revision of the Shallow-water Azooxanthellate Scleractinia of the Western Atlantic Naturalis
Cairns, Stephen D..
CAIRNS, S. D., 2000. A revision of the shallow-water azooxanthellate Scleractinia of the western Atlantic. Studies Nat. Hist. Caribbean Region 75, Amsterdam, 2000: 1-231. This paper constitutes the second of a two part revision of the western Atlantic azooxanthellate Scleractinia — this part addressing the taxonomy and distribution of the 73 species known to occur at depths shallower than 183 m within the tropical and warm temperate realm. Of this number, 27 species occur exclusively shallower than 183 m; these are fully described, figured, and mapped. The remaining 46 species are also known to occur at depths greater than 183 m, most of those species treated more fully in part 1 (CAIRNS 1979). Lists are also provided of the azooxanthellate species that...

Anatomy of Phyllodina persica (Bivalvia: Tellinidae), and its first occurrence in southeastern Brazilian waters Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Marques,Rodrigo Cesar; Simone,Luiz Ricardo L..
This study presents a detailed anatomy of a rare Western Atlantic tellin, Phyllodina persica, under a comparative scenario. Some characters are shared with other tellinids such as the large hemipalps compared to gills; gills with outer demibranch with a single lamella absent from the pericardial region; the type-V stomach associated with the style sac conjoined with the proximal intestine, and distal intestine presenting a dorsal and ventral group of loops, separated by the transverse muscle. The stomach presents a laterally enlarged typhlosole, although shallow, without flange in the margins. This feature is not found in other tellinid species. Another noteworthy feature in the stomach is the aperture of both caeca, which are larger than the left pouch...

Bony fishes (Teleostei) caught by small-scale fisheries off central to south coast of São Paulo State, Southeastern Brazil Biota Neotropica
Motta,Fabio Santos; Rosa,Marcos Rogério; Namora,Rafael Cabrera; Gadig,Otto Bismarck Fazzano.
Small-scale fisheries have a great socioeconomic importance in Brazil. Different regional characteristics along the coast, mostly related to landing sites, equipment used, and targeted species, renders its assessment and monitoring difficult. The aim of this paper is to present a list of species of bony fishes (Teleostei) caught by artisanal fisheries along the São Paulo coast, southeastern Brazil and to provide comments on the relative abundance and conservation status of those species. A total of 315 fishing fleet landings were surveyed, and 106 species distributed among 38 families were recorded. Sciaenidae and Carangidae were the most frequent families in species number. The southern king weakfish, Macrodon atricauda, was the most abundant species,...

Mixed-species schooling behavior and protective mimicry involving coral reef fish from the genus Haemulon (Haemulidae) Neotropical Ichthyology
Pereira,Pedro Henrique Cipresso; Feitosa,João Lucas Leão; Ferreira,Beatrice Padovani.
The present study analyzed heterotypic schooling behavior and protective mimicry relationships involving species of the genus Haemulon and other coral reef fishes on coastal reefs at Tamandaré, Pernambuco State, Northeastern Brazil. The work was performed during 35 hours of direct observation using the "focal animal" method. The observed events involved 14 species of reef fish in eight different families. The phenomenon of mixed schooling appeared to be related to the large number of individuals of the genus Haemulon present in reef environments and to the tendency of individuals with limited populations to try to aggregate in schools (e.g. genus Scarus).

On the identity of Porcellana paivacarvalhoi Rodrigues da Costa, 1968 (Crustacea: Anomura: Porcellanidae) Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Ferreira,Luciane Augusto de Azevedo; Tavares,Marcos.
Abstract Porcellana paivacarvalhoi Rodrigues da Costa, 1968, described from southeastern Brazil (São Sebastião, São Paulo), is morphologically similar to the eastern Atlantic P. platycheles (Pennant, 1777), and also to the west African P. africana Chace, 1956. The synonymy between P. paivacarvalhoi and P. platycheles was proposed by previous authors without examination of any specimens of P. platycheles, nor did they considered the morphological similarities between P. paivacarvalhoi and P. africana. This synonymy has been implicitly accepted without further analysis. The recent discovery of one male and two females syntypes of P. paivacarvalhoi has prompted new investigations into the status of P. paivacarvalhoi as a junior synonym either of P....

Reconstruction of east-west deep water exchange in the low latitude Atlantic Ocean over the past 25,000 years ArchiMer
Howe, Jacob N. W.; Piotrowski, Alexander M.; Hu, Rong; Bory, Aloys.
Radiogenic neodymium isotopes have been used as a water mass mixing proxy to investigate past changes in ocean circulation. Here we present a new depth transect of deglacial neodymium isotope records measured on uncleaned planktic foraminifera from five cores spanning from 3300 to 4900 m on the Mauritanian margin, in the tropical eastern Atlantic as well as an additional record from 4000 m on the Ceara Rise in the equatorial western Atlantic. Despite being located under the Saharan dust plume, the eastern Atlantic records differ from the composition of detrital inputs through time and exhibit similar values to the western Atlantic foraminiferal Nd across the deglaciation. Therefore we interpret the foraminiferal values as recording deep water Nd isotope...

Revision of Bairdiella (Sciaenidae: Perciformes) from the western South Atlantic, with insights into its diversity and biogeography Neotropical Ichthyology
Marceniuk,Alexandre Pires; Molina,Eduardo Garcia; Caires,Rodrigo Antunes; Rotundo,Matheus Marcos; Wosiacki,Wolmar Benjamin; Oliveira,Claudio.
ABSTRACT The sciaenid genus Bairdiella comprises a group of relatively small fishes found in inshore waters and estuaries of the western Atlantic and eastern Pacific. Despite recent analyses of the phylogenetic relationships of Bairdiella, there has been no comprehensive revision of the alpha taxonomy of the species of the genus. Bairdiella ronchus from the western Atlantic, has a complex taxonomic history, with four junior synonyms recognized. Based on morphological and molecular evidence, this study indicates that B. ronchus represents a species complex. The species is therefore redescribed and its geographic range is redefined. Bairdiella veraecrucis, which is currently recognized as a junior synonym of B. ronchus, is revalidated, and a new species of...

Taxonomic review of Berthella and Berthellina (Gastropoda: Pleurobranchoidea) from Brazil, with description of two new species Rev. Bras. Zool.
Alvim,Juliana; Pimenta,Alexandre Dias.
ABSTRACT Berthella currently comprises five valid species recorded from the western Atlantic, of which only Berthella agassizii (MacFarland, 1909) and Berthella stellata (Risso, 1826) have been recorded from Brazil. Two species of Berthellina occur in Brazil: Berthellina quadridens (Mörch, 1963) and Berthellina circularis (Mörch, 1863); however, based on a literature review and the anatomical study presented here, we only recognize B. circularis as occurring in the country. This study gives a detailed re-description of B. agassizii, B. stellata and B. circularis based on material from Brazil, and adds two new species to the genus, from the Brazilian coast, Berthella punctata sp. nov. and Berthellina ignis sp. nov.
